As with everything else in my life, I was pretty late to the podcasting table. Being a long time devotee of the BBC Radio App, I felt that my listening desires were already being met by John Finnemore, Sheila Dillon and the rest of those reassuringly middle class and and honey voiced dearies. Particularly when making my sculptures, a job that requires all hands and not a huge amount of brain power, there is nothing so blissful than to pop on an afternoon play or a documentary about how we're all going to die soon because the world is such a dreadful bloody mess, while I serenely sculpt a pair of perky tits out of clay.
And so it was with a hint of disbelief and an eyebrow raised to half mast that I approached my first podcast. I wasn't expecting great things, but that title was ever so catchy. And blow me down and pick me up if it wasn't the most hilarious, knicker-wettingly, slide off your seat funny thing I'd ever listened to - that's right, it's:
My Dad Wrote A Porno
I know I've mentioned this podcast in an earlier blog, and unless you are as yet a podcasting virgin and have omitted to check out the top rated lists, then doubtless you will have heard of it already. I myself am partial to pinning down guests at around 2am after a trough of wine and forcing them to listen to the first episode, laughing ahead of the funny bits like that annoying twat in the cinema who knows every line. However, if by some miracle you still have not had your ears raped by this steamy hot mess of fun, please do yourself a favour and download it immediately.
Baby Geniuses
There are days, particularly wet and chilly days, when you've been shat on by a sparrow and some old crone has stuck her bubblegum in your hair on the bus, that you want nothing more than to snuggle up at home with a cup of tea and listen to a pair of sweethearts being utterly mad. Pop on your headphones and drift away into an hour of giggling, horniness, Martha Stewart's pony and shitting your pants.
My Favourite Murder
Nothing makes you feel more warm and fuzzy inside than listening to harrowing tales of mutilation and murder while trotting hurriedly home on a cold winters evening, the streetlights swinging sinisterly in the gale as you check over your shoulder to make sure that nobody is creeping up behind you, a hand reaching out to cover your screams.......Well, surprisingly, that's true, for Karen and Georgia have a way of telling the most stomach churningly repulsive tales with such a hit of spice and fun that it (for the most part) takes the edge off the horror and lets you just enjoy the story. Although I don't recommend listening to it just before bed.
The Guilty Feminist
Feminism is not a dirty word, people! While sexism, bigotry and chauvinism are hardly topics that will bring a tear of joy to your eye, Deborah Frances-White and guests navigate the tricky subjects with a healthy interspersion of comedy and raw, honest storytelling that it makes you want to clutch your vag with pride and power. They explore what it means to be a feminist in todays society, and how we can be doing our bit for our sisters.
How Did This Get Made
If a good time for you constitutes laughing so hard that you might need to sheepishly go and change your jeans after a few minutes, then this one is for you. June, Jason and Paul obliterate the films that float in the cultural cesspit with such quick fire and witty observations, that even if they're decimating your childhood favourite you'll still be on their side. Five stars.
So hopefully these cheeky tips will fill your little ear holes with joy and nausea in equal measure as you run your errands, drive to work or sit a’ sculpting. Let’s start the new year as we mean to go on - chortling like loons, and looking foolish.
